BayCon 2009: Important Announcement
(crossposted far and wide; apologies to those of you who will see this multiple times)

chairmantycho just sent the following to the staff list, with a request for distribution.

Dear Attendees,

With deep regret, I must inform you that Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon will not be able to attend BayCon this year due to illness. Unfortunately, their doctor felt it was best for Mercedes to refrain from travel at this time as she has a nasty version of the common flu. We are in contact with them, and have been told to expect her full recovery. As a long-time fan of their work, I share your disappointment. I assure you that we are doing everything in our power to have them available via internet conference, and the Hyatt has begun working with us to solve the technical aspects of making that possible. We are also working on replacement programming that will highlight and celebrate their body of work and achievements. In addition, they are still sending many of their physical works of art for you to see, as well as autographed bookplates for BayCon to distribute. They are very disappointed as well, as they were very much looking forward to meeting us here at BayCon.

We will continue to keep you posted as we re-confirm our backup plans, and work towards having Mercedes and Larry available for you by internet conference.

Thank you for your understanding,

BayCon 2009

Queen's dress stolen
X-posted to renfaire, sca, scawest, sfbayarea, bayconcostumers.

Queen's dress stolen from San Francisco:

Help! My San Francisco garage was ransacked Saturday night, November 18. Thieves stole the beautiful Queen's dress I've worn at Folsom Faire, The Revels and at Valhalla; to be more precise, they took the bodice, sleeves and overskirt.

Designed and made by Liz Martin, this unique purple (okay, aubergine) velvet confection—beaded and pearled to within an inch of its life by the fabulous women of St. Matthews Guild—weighs at least 30 pounds.

photos here

The SFPD is looking for it. The officers who took the report say it's likely to turn up since it's so unusual; one of the officers is a Faire fan and even asked about Dickens.

As you shop Bay Area costume and thrift shops for your pleasure this season, please keep an eye out for the dress. It's tough to miss. (Yes, we've had security issues before. I was taking the dress up to my Dad's for safekeeping at Thanksgiving. Sigh.)

Generous reward offered. Please spread the word.

Thanks so much.
Deborah Doyle

(she posted her cell phone number, but i thought it wise to not post it here. should you think that you have information or should you need more information, please contact SFPD)

Hello All

If you were not involved in the Draping/Flat Patterning Class...well you should have been!! LOL

It was mentioned about making an inexpensive dummy which is the Paper dummy.

So It was pretty funny as some people had thought to make a class like this then we checked out Dick Blick online and there was a sale on the paper tape! I kid you not!

Here is Dick's sale http://www.dickblick.com/zz230/13/

We are going to have the class starting 10:30 with a shared lunch, to last until everyone has a dummy!!

You will need paper tape, which can be hard to find so you need to
purchase at least 1 roll.

You will need;

Paper cutting scissors
Hair Dryer
T-Shirt or Turtleneck shirt

We will be cutting this off of your body so you will have to have
another shirt underneath the papertape. The t-shirt for the actualy
papertape must be loose.

If you want to have one that fits with your corset? Bring on with you
to tape up with!

Are the costumers keen on any sort of meetup at BayCon? Or is that what the green room before Masquerade is for?

I, for one, will be checking in at the con on Thursday night (six days? Ohmigod, I have so much to do!) and casting about for social-type events. Anyone else?

I'll be there!
Yay, I'm coming to Baycon!

I haven't been in 13 years, since I had a baby on the Sunday of Memorial day weekend. That's meant every Mem day since has been taken up with kid parties, but this year he's granted me a pass. :D

I'm greatly looking forward to being at a Con without working a merchant table, or teaching a workshop, so I can wear whatever I want. No Elizabethan court gowns for me this year (unless I get really ambitious and finish the current one).

I can't wait!!!

BayCon Special Announcement!!!! New Special Guest!
Hello everyone!!

Calling all Centauri, Minbari, Rangers, Earth Force, and other Friendly (and possibly not so friendly or neutral) species!!!

As Vice Chair of BayCon 2006, it is my pleasure to announce that we have confirmed Stephen Furst (Vir Cotto from Babylon5) as our Special Guest this year. You may also know him as Kent "Flounder" Dorfman from Animal House and some of his many other excellent films and televison appearances.

Of particular interest is that Stephen has agreed to be a judge at the "Bablyon 5 Ambassadorial Ball" (also known as the Masquerade) on Saturday evening and there are rumors of a "Most Thematically Appropriate" award.

Here is the link to his IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0299122/

Here is the link to his official web page: http://www.stephenfurst.com/index.htm

Feel free to copy this over to whatever Babylon5 or costuming lists you feel should see it (it has already been cross-posted to my personal LJ as well as b5costumes and bayconcostumers).

We would LOVE to see all the wonderful Babylon5 costumes that have come through BayCon over the past few years come and be presented in the Masquerade this year!

We look forward to seeing you at BayCon 2006 - "Tales of Purple Space"

Mental note: econo-hoopsteel from Farthingale's and/or Hedgehog Handiworks: $18/roll, plus shipping.

Exact same item from Lacis: $37.

Well, that made that decision a lot easier. Jeezus.

I'm high if I think there's anywhere in the Bay Area to get hoopsteel other than Lacis, right?

Lacis' prices make me wince, but it's even more expensive to pay for shipping from Farthingale's... although I probably need to get some bone casing 'n' stuff too...

Double drat.

Trolling for sympathy...
Alrighty, who's already panicking about their BayCon masquerade entry?

(me! me! I'm going to be a wreck by con, dammit)

On a not entirely unrelated note, can anyone recommend a place for velvet ribbon of varying widths, other than MJ Trim? I'm probably going to go with them - given their selection and good reputation, but I'm shopping around in case I can save a few bucks, as I need to order about 20 yards of the stuff...

There is a faint chance that, some weekend in April, I'll be willing to host a stitch-and-bitch whilst catsitting at my father's place in Pleasant Hill. I'll post more about it here and on my regular journal if it happens...

I know that BayCon is crammed to the gills with events and meetups, but does anyone know if there's going to be a costumers' meetup at the con - either organized by GBACG or some like-minded maniac?

On a similar note, I'm going to be an early-bird at the con - checking in on Thursday evening. If anyone hereabouts fancies a meetup on Thursday nigiht, let me know, as I"ll probably just be holding up the bar with my roomie, otherwise. :)
1:48 pm
So, I'm working on a Deatheater mask for Baycon. Now all I need to do is make the cowl for it.
10:12 am
Is anyone besides me (and scendan) wearing a Star Wars costume? And if so, which one(s)?

Just joined this group! Hi everybody! *waves Kermit-like*
I've been seen at BayCon as: LOTR Sam (of the One Ring Circus), LOTR Sam in Orc Armor Disguise, Captain Ruby the Pirate, Kimber Benton (of Jem and the Holograms), uh, er, and I can't recall any others, although I'm certain I've been something else. But I can't recall. Perhaps it was myself.

Anyway, planning a big new thingie for this year's BayCon which I'm not sure I can or should spill at this point, so....there it is. A cliffhanger! LOL!
